Construction Courses
This course is designed to prepare learners for work in a specific trade, wishing to work towards a BTEC or similar qualification at Award, Certificate or Diploma Level.
It has been specifically developed for delivery in college using simulated conditions. You will study your chosen aspect of basic construction with a full introduction to your chosen trade.
You will also learn how to use all of the necessary tools and materials of the trade and the Health and Safety issues associated with this work.
At the end of the course you will have both the skills and technical dialogue to impress any prospective employer and the confidence to attempt the skills learnt at college, either in the workplace or as a DIY project around their home.
Overalls and safety boots are required on this course and may be purchased from the college.
Other personal protection equipment such as goggles and gloves will be provided to where necessary.
Plastering
On the plastering course you will learn some of the following skills and more..
- Learn how to mix different materials e.g. plaster, bonding, sand and cement, dry wall adhesive.
- Become familiar with the tools used in plastering and learn how to use them safely.
- Learn how to prepare work area prior to plastering.
- Learn to apply plaster to a wall.
- Learn how to plaster a ceiling.
- How to measure and cut plaster boards.
- Fix plaster boards to studded walls.
- Learn to dot and dab.
- Render walls with sand and cement and scratch and finish coat.
- Pebble dash walls.
- Learn to fix skim beads, float beads, bell cast, stop beads and arch beads.
- Work out estimated amounts of materials needed for size of the rooms.

Joinery
On the joinery course you will learn some of the following skills and more..
- Learn to identify woodworking tools and use them safely.
- Learn how to make a wide variety of Woodwork joints and use these new skills to make your own joinery projects.
- Understand wood defects and how to identify problems.
- Fit skirting boards and hang doors.
- Gain a basic understanding of Joinery skills.
- Build stood partition walls and learn the correct measuring techniques.
- Study and gain a Btec qualification in Joinery.
Bricklaying
On the bricklaying course you will learn some of the following skills and more..
- To identify and safely use the core tools e.g. trowel, brick hammer, level, line and pins.
- Learn to mix and handle mortar to make a bed for setting brick.
- Learn to build brick walls that are level and plumb.
- Learn the versatility of different brick bonds, e.g. English bond to Flemish garden wall bond.
- Circular walls and Decorative arches.
- Study and gain a Btec qualification in Bricklaying
